1950s

American Hospital Supply has gone through several names since it was founded in the late 1950s. Started in Fort Lauderdale by Charles Dillon and Bruce Andersen, Atlantic Surgical Supply, as it was originally known, was a surgical and oxygen supply company serving Miami and Ft. Lauderdale, with a few customers in the Bahamas.

1960s

In 1969, it was sold to General Medical, who, at the time, was one of the largest healthcare distribution companies in the country. Bruce Andersen opened Atlantic Medical Supply, which quickly became the largest independently owned medical-surgical distributor in south Florida. It also added more customers in the Bahamas, Jamaica, Bermuda, and beyond.

1970s-1990s

In 1978, the domestic arm of that company was sold, and the remaining international business was spun into a new company, Andersen Medical International, or AnMed as it was to be known.

AnMed expanded into every area of the non-Spanish Caribbean, including Belize and Guyana, as well as sales to PAHO and much of Latin America. With sales in medical/surgical, laboratory, pharmaceuticals, wound care, orthopedics, and dialysis, AnMed paved the way to what would become, in 1997, American Hospital Supply, Inc., led by Wes Andersen and Don Andersen.

2000 & Beyond

Today, AHS has four main divisions, med/surg, wound care/orthopedics, laboratory, and veterinary. Now led by Spenser Andersen, the corporate offices are in Maitland, Florida, with an office in Trinidad that focuses on orthopedics and wound care.

AHS looks toward growing more with the changing healthcare industry and continues to be an excellent source for quality medical products in the Caribbean.
